A guide to the most beloved of video game mascots, and why they have earned a following of millions.
The Pokémon series is the brainchild of Japanese manga creator Shueisha, who released the first two games in 1987 and 1988, respectively.
The games, which are now in their fifth and sixth instalments, have earned huge success both in Japan and overseas, with over 100 million copies sold worldwide.
As the most popular video game series of all time, the games are a worldwide phenomenon, with players from around the world visiting the Pokémon World Championships in a bid to win the Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, SoulSilver, Black, White, Black 2, White 2, Blue, and HeartGold.
The main characters of the games, Pokémon Trainer and Pikachu, have also become household names in their own right, with more than a million players worldwide who have adopted them as their own.
There are currently eight Pokémon series games in development, and the franchise is said to be set to continue, with a third installment due in 2017.
